I originally started Great American Roofing in Grapevine for residential roof repair, to re-roof houses and repair leaks in 1982.
At that time I did not know that most residential roofing companies are started just to chase hailstorms and exploit the abundant insurance claims. A lot of these "storm chasing" companies know very little about roofing techniques. They are usually very aggressive sales organizations. When the storm work in one location slows down, they move to another storm damaged area or state. Over the years I have received calls from homeowners who have roof leaks after getting a new roof. They called the roofing contractor who sold them the job and the phone number is disconnected. I have repaired a number of homes because the original roofer was out of business. The homeowner had a warranty but no roofer. Our company does hail damage work and insurance claims, but foremost we are roofers who know how to do residential roof repair.
A good roofer knows how to install proper roof details. The metal flashings around chimneys, walls and pipes are very important components of a roof system. I saw a now defunct roofing company reroof an entire apartment complex back in the early 1990's. They did not correct any flashing problems around the chimneys. When the rain came the apartments had all the same leaks even though they had new shingles. The salesman who sold this job was the lowest bidder because he did not consider the flashing details.
The owners of the apartment complex were the losers in this deal. We guarantee all of our work, whether it is a repair or a full replacement. We try very hard to do the work right the first time. We do not work right the first time. We do not want call backs, but if you have a problem we will accept our responsibility and correct it.
When Great American was first started, the work force consisted of the owner and two or three helpers. We received calls to do repairs and reroofs all around Grapevine. Our emphasis was on the quality of the work not on canvassing the neighborhoods for insurance storm claims. Many of our customers became repeat customers. Since those early days we have expanded into commercial flat roofs, standing seam, stone coated steel, TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen and built-up. One thing that has not changed through all these years is our commitment to be good roofers.
