Great American Roofing began commercial roofing Dallas area in the early 1980s. One of our first commercial roofing projects was on a shopping center called Loehman’s Plaza on Northwest Highway.
This building was surrounded by a large mansard which had a built-up roof covered by red volcanic rock. We removed all of the old roofing down to the steel deck. We fastened plywood over the steel deck and applied two plies of asphalt impregnated felt. The actual roofing product used was a man made slate called Supradur. Supradur was a popular product in those days but many of the jobs were installed improperly causing problems for the manufacturer and its sales force.
I consulted with the technical staff and followed their written installation instructions which involved carefully measuring and laying out a grid with chalk lines. The bundles also needed to be shuffled to insure a proper color blend. All of these items required extra time but the results were very good. The Supradur sales staff was so pleased that they began to refer us to other customers who needed installers. This was the beginning of our commercial roofing in Dallas. Consequently, we installed many Supradur roofs on residences and commercial structures such as The Grape on Greenville Avenue.
Our customer was happy with our performance at Loehman’s Plaza and gave us the contract on The Grape which had the same type of material specified. We were working on The Grape during the Saint Patricks day parade on Greenville Avenue. Those were exciting times of growth for our company as we were doing commercial roofing in Dallas.
A short time later Great American Roofing was referred to a lady who had married into the Owen’s sausage family. She had a number of commercial properties which had flat roofs. This was a time when “torch down” modified bitumen was being introduced. Great American Roofing began attending installation seminars and found that it was a good product to use on the flat roofs that we were being asked to take care of. Almost three decades later Great American Roofing is still installing commercial roofing in Dallas as well as cities all over Texas and Oklahoma. We are equipped to repair a roofing leak in Dallas or replace the whole roof. We will work to find solutions that are appropriate for the type of building you have.
